At a time when many Americans are keeping close tabs on their spending, bargain hunters say there are great buys to be found at the dollar store in many—but not all— categories.
Save big on these items:
- Stationery and paper goods – Notebooks, ruled paper and many office supplies are always a bargain, as are paper towels, napkins and most household paper goods.
- Cards, gift wrap and party supplies – Party to your heart’s content at rock bottom prices. You will never find lower prices on gift bags of any size and you can scoop up themed party supplies for all ages, as well as streamers, gift cards and the wrap and ribbon to make gifts look special.
- Storage options – From small kitchen containers to plastic buckets and tubs big enough for sweater or blanket storage, you can’t beat dollar store prices.
- Seasonal décor – Dollar stores frequently carry seasonal arrays of indoor and outdoor holiday décor, from Christmas tree ornaments and Easter baskets to Halloween witches to take up residence on your front lawn.
- Reading glasses – If all you need is a little magnification, you’ll find a supply of reading glasses in a variety of colors and designs at a quarter of what you’d pay at the drugstore.
- Hair supplies – Look for everything from scrunchies and headbands to brushes and rollers at super-low prices.
- Dishware, glasses and kitchen goods – You may not find a service for six, but there are great buys on odd and assorted goods for dining. Plus, you will find cooking utensils and household cleaning supplies at unbeatable costs.
- Picture frames – Frames can cost a fortune elsewhere, but you may be surprised at the choice you can find for around a buck.
- Pain relievers and cosmetics – You’ll find aspirin, lotions and soaps for a dollar, as well as a vast array of shampoos, conditioners, lip balms and more.
- Produce – Yes, there is fresh produce at many dollar stores, such as lettuce, tomatoes, pineapples and potatoes at prices way below the supermarket. But bargain-eers warn against going bananas.
