Top Decor Myths You Don’t Need to Follow

A young couple stand in the empty living room of their new home and imagine the room decor and furniture placement.

Creating a unique and welcoming home interior is a process that requires both creativity and an adherence to helpful design rules. However, it can be easy to fall into the trap of letting decor myths stifle your ability to express your unique style.

Avoid Dark Colors
A common decor myth is that dark colors should be avoided because they make a room feel small and can be overpowering. However, dark wall colors can add a sense of depth, and can anchor an otherwise lackluster space. Dark shades do absorb light, but they can create an illusion of more space when used thoughtfully. This is particularly true if you pair them with contrasting light shades, decorate with mirrors or use accent lighting within the room. Don’t be afraid to play with dark colors in any room. They can add a sense of coziness and warmth that you may not have expected.

Opt for Trendy Updates
When you’re ready to redecorate or remodel a space in your home, it can be incredibly tempting to look at all of the decor sites and magazines and opt for the most trendy options. It is understandable to want your space to feel modern and to be up to date. However, trends come and go just as quickly as they came. For this reason, before you commit to a trend, be sure that you actually like the style. If you’re upgrading or redecorating to sell your home, remember that buyers aren’t as excited about the most on-trend ideas and are usually more compelled to opt for a modern but generic aesthetic.

Empty Rooms are Minimalist Ideals
Some trendy magazines will depict minimalism as empty spaces within the home, but true minimalism is less about having a sense of emptiness and more about an intentionality with your items. Focus less on having nothing in a space, and instead opt for a few thoughtfully chosen pieces that can bring warmth and depth to your home. After all, the true concept of minimalism is about keeping only items that serve you, not leaving your room sparse and empty.
