Top Decor Rules for Good Interior Design

An Architect (Interior designer) working while selecting material sample with tablet. Home design with smart device & modern technology concept.

When it comes to decorating your home, the process can be very personal and you are always right when it comes to matters of style for your own space. However, it can be easy to get lost in the weeds when trying to reorganize or redecorate, so a few top design rules can be a helpful guide. If you are ready to upgrade your home and make your rooms more cohesive while showing off your personal style, consider these top decor rules to keep things looking their best.

Create a Focal Point
Creating a focal point within the space ensures that everything feels anchored and grounded. This gives you a chance to build off of your organization and design without making the room look unintentional and unorganized.

Focus on the Scale
It’s easy to over shop when you are fueled by interior design goals, between ads online, magazines and all the tempting options at your favorite stores, there’s no doubt there are plenty of decor and design options that fit your goals and style. However, don’t make the mistake of getting so wrapped up in the latest ad or trend that you forget the scale of your own space and needs. Focusing on the scale of your space can help you curate your designs without causing clutter or needless buying.

Let it Take Time
Great interior design doesn’t come together in a day within the average home. A well-curated space that also is functional for your daily needs can take time to build and design. Allowing yourself the luxury of making small changes over time can ensure you are thoughtful and making choices that fit your lifestyle–instead of making your lifestyle try to fit design or decor trends.

Layer Lighting Options
Amateur designers often overlook lighting, but if you are DIYing the interior design within your home, it’s one area that you can’t ignore. Good lighting can elevate your interior and make your rooms more enjoyable to be in. Layered lighting allows for dynamic aesthetics while also serving practical needs based on your activities within the room. Opt for  a combination of table lights, overhead lights and a few in-between options to light the space properly.

Keep Color Cohesive
A consistent color scheme can keep your home looking cohesive and offer a sense of balance. Whether you opt for simple neutrals with a few striking options or you are a maximalist when it comes to color, be thoughtful about your pallet to ensure nothing clashes.
