Which Home Repairs Can Be Put off and Which Shouldn’t Be?

Home repairs can be expensive, and many people put them off whenever possible. Some problems don’t need to be addressed immediately, but others should always be considered a priority.

Things to Keep an Eye on
If your circuit breaker trips or lights flicker occasionally, it may be due to a power surge. If those problems happen often, however, it’s time to call an electrician. Your family may be overwhelming your electrical system by plugging too many cords into one outlet or by overusing power strips or extension cords, or the house’s wiring may be damaged.

Outdoor paint protects wood siding from damage caused by weather, sun exposure and insects. If paint is cracked, blistering or flaking, you might be able to sand and repaint a small area yourself. If the problem is widespread, or if it seems to be getting worse, the entire house may need to be repainted.

Vinyl siding can be damaged by wind and water or melted by reflected sunlight. If you notice missing, loose or damaged shingles, there could be additional problems that you can’t see, such as insects or water damage. Have the siding inspected and any necessary repairs made.

HVAC systems can wear out over time, especially if they aren’t inspected and maintained regularly. If it’s hard to maintain a comfortable temperature or if your utility bills have been going up, your HVAC system may not be operating efficiently, or there may be leaks around windows or doors. A home energy audit can help you identify the source of the problem.

Repairs That Can’t Wait
If your roof is leaking, call a roofing company immediately. Water inside your house is evidence of a serious problem. There could be major structural damage and mold that you can’t see but that could put your family in danger.

After a major storm, inspect your roof or hire a professional to do it. Missing or damaged shingles should be replaced as soon as possible to prevent leaks and mold. You should also have your roof inspected once a year to learn if shingles have worn out from years of use, animals climbing on the roof or branches scraping against it.

A plumbing leak may not seem like a major problem, but it can get worse if it isn’t addressed and can lead to flooding or mold. If you notice any water where it shouldn’t be, call a plumber.

Foundation cracks start out small, but they can spread over time and cause a house to be unstable. If you see cracks, the problem may be much worse than it appears. Have your foundation inspected by a professional.

Be Prepared for Home Repairs
Nobody likes the idea of paying for home repairs, but putting some things on the back burner can result in more damage and higher bills. If you notice a potentially serious problem, have a professional conduct an inspection so you can understand how bad it is and figure out what to do.
