5 Considerations When Thinking About Xeriscaping

Xeriscaping, the practice of landscaping with drought-resistant plants, is a landscaping method developed in Colorado by nonprofits in conjunction with the Denver water department. While it was originally developed in the 1980s, this water-saving landscaping method is now trending in many areas as drought and other issues have begun to take shape. If you are on the fence about transitioning to this landscaping method, here are a few reasons you could benefit from Xeriscaping.

Save on Water
In areas where drought has caused authorities to mandate water restrictions, having a traditional grass lawn may be hard to care for and even harder to justify. For every green lawn, gallons of water must be used to keep it flourishing. To cut back on your water usage, replacing your grass with other landscaping options is key. Xeriscaping can help you save your water for important household needs and can even save you money if your area does not face water restrictions.

Keep Your Yard Flourishing
A well-landscaped yard can directly translate to resale value. Keeping your yard flourishing is vital since curb appeal is important for your home’s value. Xeriscaping can ensure that your yard doesn’t suffer during the next heatwave and is more resistant to issues brought about by drought.

Save Your Weekends for Other Home Projects
Tending to your yard can require a lot of maintenance. With traditional landscaping, there’s no wonder many homeowners spend multiple weekends dedicated to yardwork or need to outsource the task. Save your weekends for other home projects by adapting Xeriscaping. Since this foliage is more suited to your environment, your yard will be much easier to maintain.

Not Ready to Make the Switch?
If you are interested in the benefits of Xeriscaping, but aren’t ready to ditch your lawn completely, consider relandscaping to include more drought-friendly foliage and lessen the area in your yard that features grass or other non-native plants. This can offer you a glimpse of the benefits while preserving a more traditional aesthetic. You may find that you love the ease of maintenance of your new plants so much that you decide to convert completely.

Do You Live in a Climate That Is Not Always Dry?
If your climate is not always dry, but you experience seasons where drought-resistant plants seem appealing, you may benefit from talking to your local nursery. Landscaping with native vegetation for your area can have many similar benefits and will help ensure that your plants survive all seasons in your climate.
