Cold Weather Tips for Selling Your Home

When selling your home, it’s important to put your home’s best foot forward–so to speak. While this can be easier in peak moving season (spring through summer), it’s not impossible to do so even in the cold months of late fall and winter. While you may not have the warm sunshine and blooming flowers to highlight your home, there are a few tricks you can use to still ensure your home is warm and inviting to potential buyers.

Warm Lighting
As nights get longer and weather gets cooler, warm lighting can play a big role in boosting your home’s exterior and interior alike. Outdoor lighting in winter tends to be in a more blue hue and can make your yard look dull and grey. To add warmth and comfort, yellow and warm outdoor lighting options are a great choice for porch lights, pathways and entertaining spaces. Consider using string lights to highlight outdoor spaces and emphasize their usability even on long winter nights.

Work With a Skilled Agent
The colder months of the year present unique challenges for sellers, so don’t forget to leverage the skills of an experienced real estate agent. A knowledgeable agent can help you market effectively and price competitively, even in the slower winter months.

Avoid Excessive Holiday Decor
Fall and winter bring many holidays that are fun to celebrate by decorating, however, too much decor can distract from the features of your home. Real estate experts always recommend avoiding any interior design options that are too personalized, and holiday decor is–unfortunately–no exception. Observe your seasonal celebrations with fun traditions, but consider skipping the extra decorations this year if you’re trying to sell your home.

Make it Cozy
While making a home welcoming is key to selling during any season, it’s especially important in the colder months of the year. Keep decor minimal, but opt to stage with warm throws, cozy faux furs, and warming neutral colors. Now is an excellent time to bake fresh cookies, or use candles with seasonal and warming scents like ginger, cinnamon or vanilla and pine. For outdoor areas, consider investing in an outdoor fireplace to showcase entertaining options and add a cozy and inviting atmosphere outdoors.
