Balance Work & Life: 5 Ways to Leverage Balance, Improve Performance

January 24, 2008, 3 pm
Reading Time: 3 mins read

RISMEDIA, Feb. 6, 2008-(careerbuilder.com)-The business world is a demanding place. This demand causes many employees to find it difficult to maintain a well-balanced work life. Learn ways that you can encourage this balance, and the benefits it will bring to your company and your employees.

This mentality is very beneficial to your organization, but only for a limited amount of time. Sooner or later, that individual becomes drained and is unable to perform.

It seems like the business world gets more and more demanding on a daily basis. This increase in demand drives many employees to work themselves to the bone. They arrive very early and leave late at night to try to stay ahead of the curve. This mentality is very beneficial to your organization, but only for a limited amount of time. Sooner or later, that individual becomes drained and is unable to perform. Because humans are not robots, we require things like food, water, sleep, and, most importantly, a life.

Consequently, it is your job to ensure your employees have a well-balanced work – life relationship. In the end, you see more benefits from well-balanced employees than those that only work, work, work.

Now, in many ways, the toughest part of implementing a well-balanced work – life relationship in your organization is saying “no” to the employees who are willing to work an exorbitant number of hours. The logic behind this is simple and you can look to Sir Isaac Newtown for the answer. His Third Law of Motion states “For every action there is an equal, opposite reaction.” If your employees constantly push themselves to the limits on a daily basis, they will quickly become overworked and fatigued.

This is simply because no human can work in that manner without repercussions. The consequence of over working is lackluster performance until they regain the stamina to perform at normal levels. This directly results in a slowdown in the productivity of your company. That having been said, you see why even though overworking employees may provide short term benefits, they are harmful to both parties in the long run.

The next step is to understand why the work-life balance is a good thing for all the employees of your company. If your employees balance their work schedules with their lives, they have a constant level of production as opposed to the ups and downs of an overworked employee. This constant level of production benefits you and your employees in the long run.

Work should not be the only aspect of your employees’ lives. They all have families, friends, hobbies, etc., that make them happy.

Also, a proper work-life balance results in happier employees. Happy employees result in higher levels of productivity for your company. This is not to say that having this balance always results in happy employees, but it is a start in the right direction. Work should not be the only aspect of your employees’ lives. They all have families, friends, hobbies, etc., that make them happy. Depriving them of the ability to do what makes them happy has an adverse affect on your company. They may work the long hours, but not perform at their highest level.

It is also your job to make sure you aren’t the reason why your employees are pushing themselves to the limits. You may not realize it, especially if your employees don’t approach you about it, but you could be throwing off the balance in their lives. It can be very difficult to catch right away because of the short term benefits it offers. There are several steps you can take to ensure a more balanced work-life for all of your employees:

– Set limits for hours in the office
– Hold company outings that allow employees to bring a spouse, family, or a guest to show your appreciation and have some fun
– Promote active lifestyles outside of the office to give your employees something to look forward to after work
– Adjust your paid time off program to give your employees the ability to take a personal day when they feel like they are being overworked
– Allow for a more flexible schedule as long as your employees still work the appropriate number of hours

All of these approaches help to balance the work-life of your employees. However, to implement these solutions you must first develop a trusting relationship between you and your employees. You have to trust them to not take advantage of you and visa versa.

A well-balanced work-life relationship is very important to the productivity of your company and the happiness of your employees. It may seem like something small that may be negligible, but this balance is crucial. Once you implement a well-balanced work-life for your employees, you will be the one who is rewarded in the end.
