Moving in the Middle of the School Year – A Good Idea?

When you want to move, there is no guarantee that things will happen quickly. You might find your dream house in a few days, secure a mortgage and be able to move in right away. On the other hand, it might take months to find a house that’s big enough for your family and in a convenient location. You might find that the house needs some repairs before you move in, or the mortgage might be delayed for some reason.

If you have a child, that could put you in the awkward position of having to move after the school year has started. That could complicate things in some ways, but for many children, moving in the middle of the school year can actually be advantageous.

Benefits of a Mid-Year Move

At the beginning of the school year, the teacher is getting to know a large group of new students, explaining rules and procedures, assessing each child’s abilities and trying to help everyone feel comfortable. That can make it difficult to provide each individual student with personalized attention. If you move in the middle of the school year, after the rest of the class has settled in, the teacher will be able to pay more attention to your child and help them adjust.

Another benefit, many children find it easier to make friends. The other kids in the class will be excited to see a new face and eager to get to know the new student. When families move over the summer, children often find it difficult to make friends. If there aren’t many children of the same age in the neighborhood or organized activities, kids can feel bored, isolated and nervous about starting school. If you move in the middle of the school year, your child will immediately be surrounded by other children at school and presented with plenty of opportunities to form friendships.

Potential Challenges

While moving after the school year has started may have some social advantages, it can be challenging academically. Curriculums can vary from school to school, and your child may be ahead of or behind the rest of the class. Before you enroll your child in a new school, it’s a good idea to talk to the teacher about what the students are studying and find out if your child will need any extra help to get up to speed.

Sometimes you don’t have a choice about when to move. If you have to relocate during the school year, your child could face some academic challenges, but you and the teachers can help your child through the transition. Your child may find it easier to fit in and make friends, and you may find that moving in the middle of the school year was the right decision.
