Tips for a Mildew-Free Bathroom While Selling

One thing homebuyers want is a nice, clean bathroom. These are rooms that get used all day long, so sellers need to make sure their powder rooms are in tip-top shape.

Mold and mildew can make that difficult. They are commonly found in bathrooms because of all the moisture and lack of ventilation. If your bathroom is plagued by unsightly mold, you need to take these steps to get rid of it:

Clean. There are some effective mold- and mildew-removing cleaning products available, including options where all you need to do is spray the cleaner on mold and wait, then rinse with water. Be sure to air out the bathroom by keeping windows open and fans on while using these.

Replace the caulk. This is a simple and effective way to remove mold. Start by applying a caulk remover and wait a few hours, or even overnight. Then use a caulk-removing tool to scrape out the caulk and use a putty knife to remove or scrape away bits of caulk that the remover couldn’t. Then apply new caulk. You can use a caulk gun but stores also offer caulk in squeezable tubes. Be sure to clear away caulk that ends up on tile or the bathtub.

Buy a new shower curtain. This a great and affordable way to spruce up a bathroom. If a bathroom isn’t well ventilated, shower curtains can get moldy, and that’s an ugly sight. If there’s mold on your shower curtain liner or curtain, invest in new ones, they will be well worth it. And while you’re at it, use the opportunity to freshen up your bathroom’s look by buying matching towels, washcloths and other accessories.

Maintain the clean look. Now that you’ve put in the work to get rid of mold and mildew, you need to make sure they don’t return. Regularly cleaning is one of the most important steps in keeping bathrooms looking fresh. Also, be sure your bathroom’s ventilation fan is in good working condition and open windows whenever possible.
