Ideas for Outdoor Entertainment in Cold Weather

Outdoor entertaining has become a staple in today’s landscape, but during the cold weather seasons, it requires a little additional creativity. Far from an unpleasant obstacle, outdoor entertaining in cold weather can add a lot of fun and enjoyment to your next gathering. Follow these ideas to ensure that your next winter gathering is full of fun and warmth.

Take it to the Slopes
Outdoor entertaining doesn’t have to require you to stay in your own backyard. Truly embrace the winter weather by taking your next holiday, birthday or coworker gathering to the mountains. Enjoy all the benefits of snowy cold weather by enjoying the slopes. Whether you choose to ski, snowboard or toboggan down a snow hill, you’re sure to create lasting memories.

Host a Backyard Cocoa Bar
Your backyard space doesn’t have to close up shop for the winter. White string lights, candles and a hot cocoa bar can be the makings of the perfect cold-weather party. Set out some carafes of steaming cocoa along with a host of favorite toppings. Go traditional with candy canes, marshmallows, chocolate shavings and whipped cream. Or spice things up with adult-friendly toppings like cinnamon and chili powder, alcohol and any traditional toppings you love.

Winter S’mores
Outdoor fireplaces are a cold-weather staple. They serve to keep everyone warm and create an intimate atmosphere for your next gathering. If you’re hoping to add a little extra fun the next time you break out your outdoor fireplace, consider having your guests make their own smores. Make them traditional or add a winter flare with peppermint-flavored chocolate or marshmallows.

Winter or Holiday Movie
If you think movie nights are indoor-only activities you are missing out. Rent or purchase a projector and put up a sheet or a screen to host an outdoor movie marathon. This option is great for your own backyard or a park pavilion. (Just be sure you understand the laws regarding your movie viewing if you host it in a public place). Have your guests bring their own lawn chairs or lay tarps and blankets down on the grass to create a cozy picnic area. For added warmth, place a few outdoor heaters and some cozy blankets out for guests to use while they sit. Have your guests bring their favorite movie snacks and offer some warm cookies and cider. Want to really amp up the fun? Rent a popcorn maker to offer up some fresh and toasty popcorn right on the spot!
