Tips for Caring for Your Items in Winter

Tips for Caring for Your Items in Winter

Winter can be hard on your belongings. From general weathering from storms and cold, to winter-specific items that require additional effort, caring for your belongings in winter can require a little extra attention. Here are some tips to keep your favorite things in top shape all season long.

Tips for Sweater Weather
With winter chill comes the need to bundle up. Nothing keeps you quite as cozy as animal fiber. Whether you own a down jacket, a wool coat or another homespun creation, keeping your clothes in great shape can be more complicated in the winter. Be sure to hand wash or dry clean your items according to their label, and when in doubt, ask a professional for assistance.

Even synthetic fibers need some care from time to time. Since jackets, scarves and gloves are all used only on occasion, it can be easy to forget to properly wash your items. Set aside a day and take all of your outerwear to the dry cleaners to ensure that they keep your items looking fresh and new.

Keep Outdoor Furniture Fresh
Traditionally, outdoor furniture is brought into indoor storage units during stormy winter weather. However, as backyard fireplaces and heaters have gotten more popular, more homeowners are using their outdoor items year-round. If you have found that you enjoy utilizing your outdoor space even during the chillier months, there are some steps you can take to ensure its longevity. Purchase covers for any furniture items that don’t already have them. This can protect the fabric and paint from sun fading and unnecessary wear and tear.

Car Care During Winter
Winter weather takes its toll on everything outdoors—and your car is no exception. Keep your vehicle in good shape during the snowy weather to ensure safety this year. Flush and fill your coolant to ensure your engine is protected during freezing temps, and invest in winter tires to ensure that your car can safely transport you when the roads start to get slippery.

Protect Your Home
Your home is your largest investment. Protect it by performing winter maintenance on your property. Trim branches and remove dead trees to prevent damage. Insulate water spigots and pipes. If a freeze is expected, keep your water running to prevent a burst pipe.
