Pool Safety Tips for Homeowners

Pools can be the perfect way to relax after a long day and can provide a great source of fun for the whole family. In the right climate, there’s no doubt that a pool can be a great addition to your home. However, pools can come with risks that need to be mitigated through regular maintenance and attention.

Teach Kids to Swim
Swimming lessons can start at infancy and are crucial to ensure that children in your home are safe around water. While kids should never be left unattended near the water, if a child were to wander unexpectedly and get into the pool, proper swimming lessons could be what prevents a tragedy. If you have a pool or are thinking of installing one soon, ensure that children within your home (or who regularly access it like grandchildren) all have swimming lessons and know the pool rules.

Add Pool Fencing
Pool fencing may be legal requirements in your area, or may be required by your homeowner’s insurance. Pools are considered an “attractive nuisance” since they are enticing to children and can pose a danger to their safety. For this reason, you could be liable if proper safety precautions are not taken. Fencing for pools should be at least 4 ft high with rails less than four inches apart to prevent curious children from climbing the fence and getting into the pool.

Check Your Drain Covers
Faulty or uncovered drains can create enough suction to trap a child underwater. Unfortunately, this can (and has) led to tragic circumstances. The Virginia Graeme Baker Pool & Spa Safety Act of 2007 was created after a 6-year-old girl drowned as a result of a hot tub’s drain suction. Keep your family and guests safe by installing compliant anti-entrapment drain covers. Remember to inspect them regularly–a faulty drain can also lead to suction entrapment.

Learn CPR
No matter how many precautions are taken, there is always a risk of danger with a pool. All adults responsible for the pool should consider getting CPR certified. This can increase the likelihood that someone at home can provide lifesaving care before emergency services arrive in the event of an emergency.
