What Type of Flooring Should You Install in Your Bathroom?

Black and white modern bathroom with silver fittings with large sunny windows. Interior design concept. Soft selective focus.

If you’re planning to renovate or add a bathroom, you have many options when it comes to flooring. You should select a material that fits your priorities and your budget. Here are some key points to consider.

Choose a Material That Can Stand up to Moisture
Your bathroom floor will inevitably get wet, especially if you have kids. The material on the floor must be able to handle moisture without getting damaged. Vinyl, linoleum and ceramic and porcelain tile are commonly used in bathrooms for this reason.

Hardwood flooring is not a good choice for a bathroom because moisture can cause it to warp. You can, however, enjoy the look of wood in your bathroom without having to worry about water-related damage. Engineered wood and laminate flooring are excellent alternatives to hardwood. Cork and bamboo also offer natural beauty and moisture resistance.

Select a Durable Material
The bathroom is one of the most frequently used rooms in the house, so you should invest in durable flooring that can handle a lot of foot traffic. Ceramic and porcelain tile, engineered wood and bamboo are up to the challenge.

Install Slip-Resistant Flooring
If your bathroom includes a shower or tub, you need to consider the risk of slip-and-fall accidents. Vinyl and bamboo flooring can reduce the risk of falls. Tile can be slippery when wet, but slip-resistant options are available.

Think About Comfort
Vinyl and linoleum are waterproof and easy to clean. They’re also soft, which can be beneficial if someone slips and falls. On the other hand, that softness can make the floor susceptible to scratches and dents.

Tile is durable, but it’s also hard, and it can feel cold if people walk on it in bare feet. That won’t be an issue if you plan to install radiant heating under the floor.

Find a Flooring Material That Fits Your Budget
Constructing or renovating a bathroom is an expensive project. You’ll have to consider other factors, like the price of a shower and vanity, and figure out how much you can afford to spend on flooring.

If money is tight, you can go with a budget-friendly option like vinyl or linoleum. If you’re a skilled DIYer, you can install vinyl or linoleum flooring yourself instead of paying a contractor to do it.

Luxury vinyl plank and luxury vinyl tile are manufactured to resemble natural stone or wood. These materials offer style and beauty, but at a more affordable price point than real stone or wood. In addition, luxury vinyl plank/tile is easier to install than hardwood and better able to withstand moisture damage.

Explore Your Options
You have a wide array of options when it comes to bathroom flooring. If you’re not sure which to choose, ask your architect or contractor for advice and quotes.
