The Best Vacation Destinations for the Budgeting Traveler

Traveling can get expensive, easily costing $100 to $200 per day, per person between food, transportation and accommodations.

By forgoing top-notch hotels, expensive restaurants and other luxuries, you can spend a lot less and still have a safe place to sleep and good meals to eat while traveling.

Here are some of the best places to travel for less than $30 per day. Keep in mind, they all require making some sacrifices, such as staying at hostels, eating in inexpensive restaurants, taking public transportation, etc.

Thailand
This beautiful country has some of the cheapest and best street food in the world. Some meals cost as little as $2. Lodging, although communal, is inexpensive too. A hostel room costs $10 a night in Bangkok.

Mexico
There’s much more to Mexico than beachfront resorts that require exorbitant budgets. While some inexpensive beach areas can be found, you’re more likely to find bargains by heading inland to towns such as Guanajuato and Valladolid.

An inexpensive meal at a restaurant in Mexico can be found for just $5, a domestic beer is around $2 and you can get a hostel room in Mexico City for $10 a night.

Bolivia
Among South American countries, Bolivia is often overlooked as a tourist destination. It shouldn’t be. Bolivia contains sections of the Andes Mountains, the Amazon rainforest and Lake Titicaca. A meal at an inexpensive restaurant in Bolivia costs around $4, a beer around $2 and a hostel room in La Paz as cheap as $5 per night.

India
Haggling over price is common in many countries, but in India you can haggle for almost everything. From restaurants to hotels and souvenirs, haggling is a great way to save money on your trip.

Keep in mind, some prices are so low that you won’t need to haggle. A meal at an inexpensive restaurant costs around $2, a pint of domestic beer is around $2 and you can find a hostel room in New Delhi for $5.

There are many other inexpensive countries to travel to, if you’re willing to give up a little privacy and eat like a local. While international flights can get expensive, saving on your day-to-day spending while on vacation will more than make up for it.
