How to Take a Digital Break

smart phone addiction

We can all benefit from taking a break from screen time sometimes, whether it’s because we want to escape the negativity of some online platforms, give our eyeballs a rest or get outside and enjoy the great Canadian outdoors.

Tackle a Chore
Maybe not the most exciting item on the list, but if you want to take a break, this is a great opportunity to tackle some household tasks you’ve been putting off. Whether it’s mopping your floors or organizing your pantry, getting physical and getting a head start on beautifying your space can feel amazing.

Cook Something
This only works if you’re not using your phone or tablet to refer to a recipe, so it’s best if you cook something you know by heart or use an actual cookbook. Maybe you saw something amazing in a magazine you’re dying to try? Cooking is a meditative task for many people, and one that requires focus and attention to detail. As a bonus, it usually has delicious results!

Get Outside
Probably the easiest way to take a break is to just get outside and go for a stroll. Whether that means a neighbourhood walk, a trip to a local market or a hike through one of Canada’s national parks, this is a fun and healthy way to get away from the screen.

Exercise
Want to stay energized and get your sweat on? Leave your phone behind and head to the gym or go for a run. If you’d rather not tackle any outdoor fitness during the Canadian winter (who would blame you?) try a home workout. Many of these can be done with just a mat and a resistance band.

Volunteer
Lock down regular anti-screen time by committing to a weekly volunteer stint. From serving meals at a shelter to tutoring kids to volunteering with animals, there are so many ways to give back to the community. This is a great way to ditch the screen and re-focus your energy.

Reorganize
Take a hint from your favourite lifestyle magazine and re-design part of your home. This could be as simple as overhauling the contents of your bookcase or putting some fresh flowers in your kitchen, or as ambitious as rearranging all your furniture.

Meal Plan
If you ever find yourself scrambling for ingredients or dinner ideas halfway through the week, put your phone down and spend some time planning out a week’s worth of meals. This is also a great time to make a trip to the grocery store or farmer’s market and get all the ingredients. Not only is this a great way to re-focus, but it reduces the chance of impulse eating during the week.

Call Someone
Even though this still requires a phone, it gives your eyes a break and lets you connect with a close friend or loved one in a different way. Call your mom and you’ll get major bonus points!

Write/Read/Photograph
Sometimes a creative break can be a refreshing way to get away from all things digital. Take some time to jot some memories down in a journal. Pick up a book or magazine you’ve been meaning to read. Go for a stroll and take a camera (a real one, not your phone!) to capture some shots.
