7 Genius Hacks to Organize Your Messy Closet

We Canadians pride ourselves on watching our carbon footprints. We don’t like to throw things away that we think might serve some purpose even if we haven’t used or worn them for some time, so reorganizing our closets might be a little anxiety-inducing. If you’re in that boat, perhaps having some useful hacks to reorganize your closet might serve you well.

Here are seven tips to make closet organization a whiz:

  • Clothes bars. If you have a fairly large closet, additional clothes bars can definitely put your space to good use. Installing a bar close to the ceiling can actually double the hanging area you have.
  • The door. Most people don’t think to make use of the back of a closet door, but it’s the perfect spot for a shoe organizer to store several pairs of shoes. It can also be a great place to hang a plastic pocket accessory organizer for your trinkets and scarves.
  • Cubby cubes. Make use of some of the closet’s floor space by buying a few inexpensive cubby cubes to store bins that you’ve filled with items. If you stack them vertically, you can use the tops as shelf space for things like sunglasses, bracelets and watches. Laid horizontally, they can be used as shelves for more of your footwear.
  • Hook up. Unused wall space can be easily converted to storage spots by installing some hooks, where scarves, bags and light sweaters can easily find a home. You’ll be able to keep your drawers less cluttered and looking organized by doing this. Things hanging neatly on hooks can look great, and you’ll be able to get to them in a pinch.
  • Labels. When you’ve got all kinds of storage bins in your closet, the fastest way to get at things is to affix labels telling you what’s inside. That way, you won’t have to open up each bin and rummage through everything, potentially undoing all the organization you’ve accomplished.
  • Zone in. Go the extra mile and think of your closet in various zones: Lower rods can be for tops and skirts, poles at eye level can hold dresses, and shirts and suits can hang from the high bar. Store your out-of-season wear on the highest shelves.
  • Type and colour. You might want to consider hanging things of similar colours together. You can also hang blouses of the same sleeve length together. That way, when you go into your closet, you’ll know exactly where to look for what you have in mind to wear. Keeping like with like really does work.
