The Ultimate Holiday Decorating Guide

Whether you prefer a less is more or more is more approach to holiday decorating, there is no cozier feeling than a home filled with festive cheer. So, as you prepare to create a holiday backdrop for quiet movie nights under the warm glow of the tree or a house filled with family and friends, consider this your checklist to ensure your halls are appropriately decked. Read on for inspiration to devise your holiday decor plan.

Living Room or Family Room
As the room you will likely gather in the most during the holidays, the living room can use an extra dose of holiday cheer. Whether you decorate every surface or have a few pared-back holiday items, a decorated living room becomes a holiday backdrop for memories in the making. Here are a few living room holiday decorating ideas:

  • Select a focal point. Whether you choose the tree or your mantel, select one focal point that will steal the show this holiday season.
  • Drape the mantel with garland, hang stockings and stagger candlesticks in different heights to add a holiday glow.
  • Hang wreaths on the windows, or hang them down your bookshelves.
  • Swap out your throw pillows and blankets for winter-esque versions, such as plaid or faux fur pillows and plenty of cashmere throws. The pillow size should be at least 24 to 26 inches for a luxe look and maximum comfort.

Kitchen
As you prepare the bites, bake the cookies and roast the ham, being surrounded by holiday magic makes the prepping and cooking process more pleasant. Here are several holiday decorating ideas for the kitchen:

  • Hang wreaths on the cabinets and the kitchen windows.
  • Hang miniature wreaths on the back of the counter stools.
  • Create a holiday centerpiece for the center of your island. Evergreen boughs, pinecones, red berries or branches create a neutral yet elegant display.
  • Simmer a pot of holiday aromatics on the stove so the scent of Christmas can waft through the home.

Dining Room
Especially if you’re hosting holiday gatherings, making the dining room feel extra festive should top your holiday decor list. The following are holiday decorating ideas for your dining room:

  • Create a holiday tablescape with garland, wreaths and plenty of candles.
  • Hang wreaths on the windows.
  • Put a tree in the corner or in front of the window so that you can enjoy your holiday meal under the warm glow of the tree lights. Select an ornament theme for visual continuity.

Bedrooms
Decorating the bedrooms can feel the most special of all the rooms. It’s unexpected and makes the rooms feel incredibly cozy. Here are a few ways to decorate the bedrooms for the holidays:

  • Put small trees in each room to go to sleep with the glow of the lights.
  • Swap out your sheets for holiday-themed plaid sheets.
  • Hang wreaths from the bedroom windows.
  • Put electric candles in the windows.

As you transform your home into a winter wonderland, check this list to ensure every room is filled with the holiday cheer you need to get into the season.
