Assembling a Home Construction Team

Assembling a Home Construction Team

If your house is one construction project away from becoming your dream home, assembling a team that can flawlessly execute your vision is critical to a low-stress renovation project. Whether you hire a design-build firm that can handle the entire process from start to finish or you prefer to hand-pick your team, certain professionals are vital to a successful project. If you’re looking to embark on an upcoming home renovation, read on for how to assemble a construction dream team.

Project manager or general contractor
A general contractor or project manager is vital to the success of your project. This individual will be the one who oversees all the subcontractors, vendors and often handles purchasing and procurement. Working with a project manager or general contractor you trust will help the project stay on budget and on time. This person will hire all the subcontractors, purchase materials, coordinate deliveries, pull permits, and handle all the details that a construction project requires.

Architect
For renovation projects that are of significant size and scale, you’ll need an architect. If your project requires you to apply for a permit with your township, you’ll need to submit architectural drawings. Additionally, these drawings can help bring your vision to life so you’re confident that the project is progressing correctly.

Interior designer
An interior designer does more than select colors, upholstery and decor. Designers can have highly technical skill sets, which are necessary when you’re embarking on larger renovation projects, such as a kitchen renovation or removing and adding walls. A designer can conceptualize the final project and provide direction on particular architectural details that will create a seamless layout post-construction. For example, giving guidance on outlet placement, door width, window size and placement and air vent return placement can be important when executing the furniture floor plan. During the construction phase, a designer will guide you to maximize the layout and select the materials and finishes that will work best with your lifestyle and how you could live better in the space.

Landscape designer
A renovation often involves adding additional living space, removing siding, reconfiguring windows and other updates that impact the house’s exterior. This likely requires removing the existing landscaping, which means the home will need a new landscape design plan. A landscape designer can design your exterior space and select functional and decorative landscaping elements. In addition, a landscape designer can help you marry the interior and exterior, create outdoor living spaces, identify the best foliage for your region and incorporate design hardscaping elements to create your dream outdoor space.
