Your home is not only a great investment, it is a source of pride and comfort. But as any a seasoned homeowner will tell you, it takes regular maintenance to keep it humming and prevent costly repairs down the line.
- Check HVAC filters – Air filters should be replaced about four times a year, but to keep your indoor air quality at its best, check them monthly to be sure they are not clogged with dust or debris.
- Lubricate garage doors – To keep your garage door opening and closing smoothly and quietly, and to prolong its useful life, use an appropriate lubricant on the metal or plastic rollers on each side.
- Inspect sink and tub drains – Especially if you notice they are not draining as quickly, look for and remove any noticeable debris buildup and pour a cup of baking soda down the drain, followed quickly by some hot water.
- Clean the garbage disposal – Take half a cup of baking soda and a cup of white wine vinegar, and pour both down the sink. After a few minutes, pour in some boiling hot water. Then fill the drain with some ice cubes and a cup of salt, which will help to remove debris. Finally, add lemon halves to the disposal with both the water and the garbage disposal running.
- Clean the range hood filter – Over time, the filter becomes less effective as grease builds up. To clean it, remove and place it in a sink filled with hot water, dishwashing liquid and baking soda. Let it soak for 10 to 15 minutes, then rinse clean and dry with a paper towel before replacing.
- Clean the fridge grill – The grill at the bottom of your refrigerator builds up dust over time and blocks air flow, which can burn out the cooling system. Wipe it down and keep it clean to keep the fridge running smoothly.
