When it comes to safety, it pays to be prepared for unexpected situations. That is especially true at home, where the unexpected leak, power failure, or other emergency can happen at any time—and often does. For safety’s sake, here are seven items that should have a place in every home:
- First aid kit – First on the list, because accidents happen, is a fully stocked first aid kit. Think about having two on hand—one as backup in case you have forgotten to restock something.
- Power outage essentials – In addition to a couple of flashlights and extra batteries, it’s a good idea to stock candles, matches, bottled water and some canned food. and a manual opener. (These can also be of service in the event of an earthquake or other natural disaster.)
- Fire extinguisher – Keep one in the kitchen and another in the garage or on the second story of your home if you have a second level.
- Carbon monoxide detector – Carbon monoxide is known as a ‘silent killer’ because it is a toxic gas you cannot see or smell. A detector will alert you in time to get everyone to safety. If you have a second story in your home, install one on both levels.
- Whistles – Keep a few handy in several places for family members to blow if they spot an emerging danger, such as a fire breaking out or a bear or a human breaking in. (It pays to set parameters everyone understands—i.e., missing homework or a lost shoe are not emergencies.)
- Tarps – Tarps come in various strengths and sizes. In the event of an approaching storm or high winds, they are handy for securing outdoor items that might possibly become airborne.
