Things That Immediately Turn Off Potential Homebuyers

When you’re trying to sell your house, you need it to make a positive first impression on prospective buyers. People who are searching for their next home are usually interested in several properties, and they won’t spend time looking at houses with problems. These are some of the top things that make buyers instantly decide that a property isn’t for them.

Lack of Curb Appeal
A house’s exterior is the first thing that potential buyers see. If it creates a negative impression, many people won’t even bother to get out of their cars and look at the interior. Tall grass, unkempt bushes, weeds, toys and other objects scattered in the yard, and peeling paint can make buyers decide to pass on your property.

Even if your house doesn’t have any of these problems, the exterior might still need work. For instance, you might have to plant some colorful flowers to make the property more attractive or paint the front door a more appealing color.

Clutter
Seeing papers, books and other items covering counters and other surfaces can be an immediate turnoff. Clutter can give buyers the impression that the house doesn’t have enough storage space, that you neglect routine maintenance, or that you’re trying to conceal problems.

Unpleasant Odor

If people walk into your house and detect an unpleasant smell, it will be hard for them to focus on anything else. An odor might come from pets, cigarette smoke, food, water damage, or another source. Whatever it is, you’ll have to deal with it so it doesn’t drive away potential buyers.

You might not notice a persistent smell that you’re used to living with. If your real estate agent, a friend, or a relative tells you that your house has an unpleasant odor, take the issue seriously, even if you don’t smell it yourself.

Identify the source of the problem and address it directly. For example, you might need to have your carpets professionally cleaned to get rid of pet odors. Don’t use air fresheners to mask an unpleasant smell. Buyers will realize that you’re trying to cover something up.

Unexpected Paint Colors
You have the right to decorate your house in a way that suits your personality, but other people might not share your tastes. When you’re trying to sell your house, you need to decorate it in a way that will make buyers think they could feel at home there.

Bold paint colors are polarizing and can instantly turn off prospective buyers. Before you list your house, paint the walls with neutral colors that will appeal to the general public.

Listen to Your Agent
You might not notice problems with your house, but buyers will. Your real estate agent knows what appeals to buyers and what turns them off. Take your agent’s advice and address any issues before you put your home on the market.
