4 Unique Activities to Add to Your Summer Schedule

Photo of a children splashing in the yard. Summer time.

Summer can be full of fun and offers the perfect opportunity for engaging in unique activities that help you maximize the sunny weather. Unfortunately, while many of us eagerly look forward to summer, it’s too easy to get caught up in daily life and forget to enjoy summer fun. This year, don’t let the season pass you by. Make the most of your summer by scheduling some of these activities.

Mystery Book Swap
Summer is an excellent time to enjoy a new book—especially if you have a comfortable outdoor lounge chair or hammock to enjoy the sunny days. Summer is a great season to host a book swap or gifting party. Gather your fellow readers and have everyone bring a book they loved. Have each attendee wrap their book in craft paper with a few descriptors about the genre and plot. Do a white elephant-style exchange where everyone unwraps a mystery book. To ensure attendees get a new read that will interest them, allow everyone a moment at the beginning to peruse the book options and their respective descriptions.

Backyard Movie Night
Hosting a backyard movie night is a ton of fun for grown-ups and kids alike. Whether you make it an adults-only event with a horror or action movie paired with some specialty cocktails, or a child-friendly event with popcorn and an animated classic, there’s no doubt your movie night will be the talk of the town.

Make a Sprinkler Obstacle Course
Beat the heat and keep kids entertained by making an obstacle course out of cones, pool noodles or rope. Keep things cool by using a sprinkler for added fun to the obstacles or at the end of the course! Just remember to keep the obstacles challenging but safe when wet. Mazes or limbo runs are easy ways to add fun while keeping safety in mind.

Plan a Progressive Picnic
If you feel that the best part of a great summer picnic is the view, a progressive picnic is for you. Instead of eating all of your food in one place, pack carefully to enjoy each course at different points of a scenic path or park. Enjoy a delicious charcuterie snack at one area, your main meal in another, and finally, head to a vista or viewpoint to indulge in a picnic dessert. Whether you opt to have your picnic at a coastal beachside path or simply enjoy the scenery at a local park, you’re sure to enjoy the journey as much as the destinations.
