How Much House Can You Buy for $300,000?

Have $300k to drop on a house? You won’t be surprised to know that how much house you can get for that price tag varies wildly across the country. From a 165-square-foot studio in Manhattan to a 4,478-square-foot mansion in Memphis, your new home’s location will tell what bang you’re getting for your buck.

Check out the deets from a new Point2Homes study that compares what you can get for $300,000 in America’s top 50 cities.

  • You could buy 1,700-square-foot homes in all of New York City’s outer boroughs (plus one in Los Angeles) for the price of one home of equal size in Manhattan.
  • You could buy 1,700-square-foot homes in five major cities in neighboring states for the price of one home of equal size in San Francisco (and still have cash for a sports car left over).
  • You can buy four median-sized houses in Detroit for $300,000. Or just one really huge, 7,000-square-foot mansion.
  • You can buy two median-sized homes and a 1,000-square-foot condo in Memphis for $300,000.
