How to Pack a ‘First-Night’ Box for Your New Home

Boxes, boxes and more boxes! When you move to a new home, you might get overwhelmed by the mountain of boxes to unpack, and it could be difficult to track down essential items during the first night in your new space. To avoid frustrating searches amid the chaos, pack a designated moving box filled with your basic necessities.

Unsure what to put in your so-called “first-night” box? Consider these suggestions from the moving experts at Allied Van Lines:

Sleep supplies. You’ll need something to sleep on during your first night, and your bed might not be assembled yet. In that case, pack an air mattress, blanket and pillow in your first-night box. Also include pajamas so you’ll have something cozy to sleep in. Make sure to pack enough materials for your entire family.

Toiletries. Toilet paper is essential, and you won’t want to be scrambling to find your toothbrush and toothpaste after a long day of moving. You may also need to take a shower on your first night, so pack soap, shampoo, conditioner and a towel.

Nonperishable food. Your refrigerator and freezer might not be running during your first night, and you may consider ordering takeout. Regardless, pack several nonperishable food items to ensure you have something to snack on throughout moving day.

Kitchen necessities. You’ll definitely need some plastic plates, cups and utensils. This will keep you from digging for dishes every time you want a drink or something to eat.

Pet supplies. If you have animals, make sure you have everything they’ll need readily available, such as a dog’s leash and collar. Just like you, your pet will also need to eat after a long move. Consider including your pet’s food, a few treats and bowls in your first-night box.

Electronics. After an extensive day of moving, items like your cellphone and tablet will likely need to be charged. To prevent being in your new home with a dead battery, include all your chargers in your first-night box.

Medical items. Moving usually comes along with some minor injuries and aches. Having a first aid kit, including some over-the-counter pain medications, on hand will make patching up scrapes and relieving aches much easier. Also include any daily prescription medication you may need in your first-night box.

To ensure you keep your first-night box separate and easy to find, remember to load it on the moving truck last or bring it with you in the car before heading to your new home.
