How to Make Your Home Smell Amazing…Naturally

There’s nothing like a great scent to make your home feel clean and inviting! While plenty of store-bought products can accomplish this goal, from scented candles to room sprays to pricey decorative accessories, you can avoid chemicals and save a few pennies by making your own home fragrances with just a few simple products. Here are some DIY home scents you can quickly whip up on your own:

Lemon Basil Room Spray. Combining lemon and basil creates a clean scent for freshening your home. Just add 4 tablespoons of dried basil to 3/4 cup of boiling water and let it steep. Use a funnel lined with a coffee filter to transfer the liquid into the base of a spray bottle, add 3/4 cup distilled water, 1 tablespoon vodka and five drops of lemon essential oil to the bottle. Shake and spray as needed to deodorize any room.

DIY Reed Diffuser. You can create an attractive reed diffuser with products you probably already have around the house. Just add a teaspoon of your favorite essential oil to a small glass container, then fill the rest with baby oil. Drop in a few rattan diffuser sticks and set your creation on a counter, bureau or bathroom shelf. The lovely fragrance will slowly waft up through the sticks for a sustained fragrance.

Linen Spray. For a great way to freshen towels, bedding, clothes or furniture, just combine one tablespoon of vodka and 35 drops of essential oil in a reusable spray bottle. Fill the remainder of the bottle with distilled water, shake and spray away to keep your linens smelling squeaky clean.

Carpet Deodorizer. Remove lingering smells from rugs and carpets with this simple-to-make powder. Start by mixing 1 cup baking soda and 1/2 cup cornstarch in a medium bowl. Add five drops of essential oil and combine. Pour the mixture into a mason jar and punch small holes in the lid using a hammer and nail. Now you can just lightly sprinkle the mixture onto the carpet as needed; let it sit for at least 30 minutes, then vacuum.

These projects are quick, easy and fun but the sweet-smelling results will last for weeks.
