5 Tips to Keep Your Pup Safe This Summer

Summer is here! The sun is shining, the kids are out of school and the possibilities are endless. As the days warm up and activities shift outdoors, it’s important to remember to keep an eye on your pup so that they stay happy, healthy and safe. Help your pooch beat the heat with these easy tips and tricks this summer.

Don’t Leave Your Pooch Unattended
When you’re out and about, make sure not to forget your furry friend. Do not ever leave your dog unattended in a vehicle. This can lead to heatstroke. Signs of heatstroke include panting, drooling, rapid pulse and fever. If your dog is exhibiting any of these signs, immerse them in cool water and seek veterinary care immediately.

Stay Hydrated
Be certain that your pups have easy access to plenty of fresh water. When you bring your dog along to the park, on a long walk or a hike, make sure that you take a travel bowl and extra water to keep them cool and hydrated!

Watch When You Walk
It can be tempting to walk outside in the sunshine.. However, our pooches can’t always handle the heat. If you’re planning on taking your dog on a long, strenuous walk, make sure to do so when the sun isn’t at its peak. Walk in the early mornings or late evenings to keep your pooch safe and happy.

Keep ID On At All Times
You can get lost in the summer sun, but don’t let your pooch get lost in the crowd. Be sure to keep some form of identification on your pup at all times when you’re outside. It’s best to include a phone number on your dog’s  tag so somebody can contact you if they wander off.

Check The Heat!
Remember that dogs don’t have shoes to protect their paws from the pavement. Before you take your pooch outside, check the ground to see if it is safe for their feet. Place the back of your hand on the pavement. If you can’t comfortably keep it there for seven seconds, it’s too hot for your pup.
