5 Home Security Tips for Homeowners

Many homeowners don’t spend a lot of time thinking about home security until a problem occurs in their area. Unfortunately, even the calmest neighborhoods can suffer from unexpected security risks. Home security is definitely a topic where it pays to be proactive. Keep your family and your property safe year-round with these five home security tips.

Install a Security System

Home security systems are the first thing that comes to mind when most homeowners think about options to keep their homes safe from threats. There’s no doubt that an automated system with a reliable response team can do a lot to keep your property safe in the event of a trespasser or attempted theft. While some homeowners can opt out of a security system because it can seem prohibitively expensive, it can pay to see what options are available in your area. The peace of mind might be worth it in the end.

Install More Lights

A well-lit property is less likely to be the target of an attempted crime. Since visibility means a higher chance of getting caught, the simple act of installing more lights on the exterior of your home and around your property can be the key to ensuring your home is overlooked as a potential target.

Opt for a Smart Camera or Doorbell

A smart doorbell or a smart camera system can be a great way to keep tabs on your home without paying for a traditional security system. Plus, installation is extremely simple and, unlike a traditional security system, usually does not need to be hardwired. Whether you use it alone or in conjunction with a traditional security system, you’ll love to be able to keep an eye on your home when you’re away.

Trim Foliage

Large bushes, unwieldy and tall foliage and untrimmed trees can all serve as excellent hiding places for would-be thieves. Enhance your property’s curb appeal and its safety by simply trimming the foliage around your home consistently.

Create a Neighborhood Watch

A few good neighbors can protect your home better than any security system. Get to know your neighbors to ensure you can look out for each other. If you want to truly bolster the safety of your neighborhood, consider starting a neighborhood watch.
