Inexpensive Ways to Improve the Look of Your Kitchen Cabinets

The cabinets are a focal point in the kitchen. The way they look affects the way that people perceive the entire room. If your cabinets are worn, damaged, or outdated, here are several strategies that you can use to dramatically improve their appearance while sticking to your budget.

Replace the Hardware
One of the easiest and most affordable ways to upgrade your kitchen is to install new knobs and pull on the cabinets. You’d be surprised by how much a different color and/or design can change the look of your kitchen as a whole.

Reface the Cabinets
If your cabinets are in good shape from a structural perspective, but they need some work in terms of aesthetics, you can reface them. This is a straightforward and inexpensive DIY project that the average homeowner can handle. All you’ll have to do is remove the doors, strip off the existing paint or stain, apply a fresh coat, then rehang the doors.

Remove Cabinet Doors
If you want your kitchen to feel more open, you can remove the doors from some or all of the cabinets. That will allow you to put attractive dishes and glassware on display and make them easier to reach while you’re preparing a meal.

Install Glass Inserts
If you would like to show off some of your finest kitchen pieces, but you don’t want your cabinets to be completely open, you can install glass inserts in the doors. You should be able to handle that project yourself and save some money.

Add Crown Molding
Installing crown molding along the tops of your cabinets can make them seem higher and make your kitchen look more sophisticated. You can have a contractor install crown molding, or you can do it yourself if you have the right tools and experience.

Replace Your Cabinets on a Budget
If your existing cabinets are damaged or designed in a way that doesn’t suit your needs, you might be thinking about installing brand-new ones. Buying finished cabinets and having them professionally installed can be expensive.

If you’re relatively skilled at carpentry projects and you like a challenge, you can build your own cabinets. If you’ve never built cabinets from scratch before, there are plenty of resources available that can guide you through the process.

Another option is to purchase cabinets that have already been constructed, but not finished. When you buy unfinished cabinets, you’ll paint or stain them and then install them yourself. That can help you find a sweet spot in terms of the amount you’ll have to pay and the amount of time you’ll need to invest.

Choose the Right Strategy for You
Upgrading your kitchen’s appearance doesn’t require a major remodel or a large outlay of cash. Some simple and affordable changes can make a world of difference. Think about what you would like to change about your kitchen cabinets and choose a path that suits your goals and budget.
