5 Ways Tiny Condos Can Be Big on Style

If you’ve outgrown your smaller condo and are looking to move up to a larger unit or into a single-family home, you can bet there are people looking to make their first foray into homeownership like you previously did.

Just because a condo is on the smaller side, doesn’t mean it has to be short on style. In fact, there are many ways to increase your home’s value and get the biggest bang for your buck. Here are five to consider:

Define spaces. An open concept look isn’t necessarily the best design plan for a smaller condo. Each space should have its own purpose. For instance, a buffet can be parked between the dining and kitchen areas for storage and serving in a snap.

Vertical storage. When you create tall, narrow storage spaces, you have the illusion of more space since the eye travels up. Think floor to ceiling, such as adding shelves on either side of a door or using an entertainment unit that could double as a room divider.

Go light on colour. Lighter shades make rooms look more spacious. Experts say to use this rule of thumb: Pick two shades that are light and bright for the best part of the space and then choose a darker colour as an accent to pull everything together.

The layering trick. There is a lack of depth in small spaces but don’t fear, that can be remedied by layering. For instance, put up some visually interesting and fun shadow boxes on the walls. An area rug will also add some dimension. When it comes to the bedroom, use lots of throw pillows and blankets on the bed. Using different materials and textures when layering can also create the right look and mood.

Less is more. There is nothing worse in a small space than clutter. Take stock of what you have that you aren’t using and then give it away, donate it or trash it. Your home will look more polished because of it.

As a small condo owner in Canada you can get creative when marrying interior design and function. A prospective purchaser will be sure to notice.
