You’re moving to an urban area because you want the benefits of living in a city and probably to be closer to work. Something you may not have considered, however, is the history of your neighborhood.
Most cities have been around a long time, which means lots has happened there over many decades, and even a century or two.
If you live in the Northeast, your city may have been part of the events that shaped our nation during the American Revolution. Other destinations may have been home to legends of the Old West or Civil War activity.
Just about every city has a story to tell, lots of them, in fact. And here’s how you can find out about them.
A Local Historical Society: Your city or neighborhood may very well have a historical society or similar organization that has all sorts of information. You can find out about events that happened in your area, and maybe even the story of your building, if it’s older. This group may also host exhibits and events that offer insights on what made your city the place it is today.
Museums and Historical Sites: Cities are home to museums large and small. Some may have rotating exhibits that showcase creations by local artists or artifacts from past events. Or there may be destinations where local history took place, even houses that are preserved to look the way they did hundreds of years ago to illustrate how people used to live in your community.
Check Out the Library: Many libraries have sections devoted to books and materials about the community they are based in. Because these books are so focused on one particular area, they may not be readily available at bookstores or even online. Libraries also host programs and exhibits about the local community.
Visit a University: Universities and colleges are outstanding resources not only for students, but for the community as well. History professors may host public lectures about local lore, or even be willing to talk with visitors one-on-one. The college’s library is another place that may have materials about the city you call home.
