Should You Upgrade Your Home Appliances?

Should You Upgrade Your Home Appliances?

Much of the energy your family uses each month powers the home appliances you use on a regular basis. If they are nearing the end of their lifespan, or if your utility bills are too high, upgrading could save you money. New appliances could also appeal to buyers if you decided to sell your house in the future.

ENERGY STAR Appliances
ENERGY STAR is a voluntary program created by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to encourage companies to innovate and produce the most energy-efficient products possible, as well as to save homeowners and businesses money. ENERGY STAR appliances undergo routine testing to ensure they meet high standards so customers can shop with confidence.

ENERGY STAR appliances have significantly reduced fossil fuel and water consumption and saved consumers billions of dollars in utility costs. They are also more convenient since they allow owners to wash more clothes or dishes in less time.

ENERGY STAR appliances are more expensive up front than standard appliances, but homeowners typically save substantial amounts of money in the long run through lower utility bills. Since ENERGY STAR appliances use more advanced technology than other models, repairs can be more complicated, time-consuming and expensive than they are with standard appliances.

Stainless Steel Appliances
Many homeowners love the look of stainless steel appliances, which are made from a combination of several metals to provide strength and durability. Stainless steel appliances can last for years without showing wear or damage from water, rust or heat. Most appliance companies offer stainless steel options, so if that’s your preference, you’ll have plenty to choose from.

Stainless steel appliances show dirt, dust and fingerprints. This may or may not be a problem for you, depending on how much your family uses the kitchen and whether you have young kids. Stainless steel appliances typically cost more than other appliances, but many buyers favor them, so they could increase your home’s resale value.

Smart Appliances
Smart appliances can shift certain activities, such as a refrigerator’s defrost cycle, to off-peak times when utility companies often charge lower rates, which can lead to substantial savings. If you used an appliance during peak hours, it could run on a low-energy cycle. Many smart appliances can be controlled remotely through a smartphone app, which homeowners find convenient. Smart appliances cost more than other models and can be more expensive to repair.

Is It Time for New Appliances?
Worn-out or inefficient appliances can cost you a lot in terms of utility bills. If your appliances are old, upgrading them with more energy-efficient, attractive and convenient ones could save you money and help you attract a buyer if you sold your house later. Before you decide to buy new appliances, be sure to compare brands and shop around for competitive prices.
