Pros and Cons of Buying a House With a Gym

Many people want to work out and purchase a gym membership, but rarely use it. Buying a house with a gym could make exercising more convenient and might encourage you to work out more often, or you might find that you don’t exercise nearly as often as you thought you would.

Convenience
People often want to work out but find that life gets in the way. Working, taking care of kids and handling household chores may seem to take up all your free time. You may find it difficult to fit in a workout plus a drive to and from the gym, therefore, you may not exercise at all.

Having a gym in your home would give you more flexibility. You could exercise before work, after your kids went to bed or while doing the laundry. The convenience of having a gym right in your home could make it harder for you to come up with excuses not to exercise. A home gym could be particularly convenient if you don’t have long stretches of time to work out, but you could find 10 or 15 minutes here and there. You might also enjoy exercising at home on stormy days instead of driving to a gym in bad weather.

Family Bonding
A home gym could encourage other members of your family to work out. You and your partner might find that you enjoy exercising together or your kids might like to work out with you. A home gym could help your whole family become healthier.

Distractions
If you worked out at home, family members might still come to you with questions and requests while you were exercising. You would have to make it clear that you were not to be disturbed during workout times so you could stay focused.

Lack of Motivation
Many people enjoy working out in a gym because they can get motivated by others. People who have home gyms often find that their fitness equipment sits unused. You might find it hard to stay motivated if you only worked out at home alone. If you exercised with family members, you could encourage each other and have fun.

Little Effect on Resale Value
If you decided to sell your home in the future, a home gym might not increase its value compared to other homes in the neighborhood, but it could help you appeal to potential buyers who are fitness enthusiasts. For buyers who are comparing your home to a similar one without a gym, the fitness space could be the deciding factor.

Make Exercise a Priority
If you decide to buy a home with a gym, set goals in terms of how often to work out and what types of exercise to do, and hold yourself accountable. Make sure that your family understands that exercising is important to you and either gives you time to work out alone or exercises with you.
