How to Decorate a Small Bedroom

Home CRISIS-Friendly
April 14, 2021
Reading Time: 2 mins read

A small bedroom doesn’t have to feel cramped and claustrophobic. The right choices when it comes to furniture, lighting and decorative features can make your bedroom feel roomier than it really is and let you express your individual style.

Get Rid of Clutter
Having objects strewn about a room of any size can make it seem messy, disorganized and small. In a bedroom that has limited square footage to begin with, clutter can become even more of a problem.

Before you begin thinking about how to decorate a small bedroom, decide what you want to keep and what can go. You may realize that some items that would ordinarily be stored in a bedroom, such as clothes, will be better in another place so the bedroom won’t feel too crowded. Keep the tops of your dresser and nightstands as clear as possible to avoid making the room look cluttered.

Choose the Right Furniture
Figure out which types of furniture are essential for the bedroom and which are optional. Think about the overall size of the room and choose pieces that won’t overwhelm the space.

Place the bed along a main wall or in front of a window and situate it so there is space to walk around it. That can help you avoid making the bedroom seem even smaller.

Using furniture that serves more than one function can help you make the best possible use of the limited amount of space you have available. For example, if you can’t fit a dresser in the bedroom, you can put clothes in nightstand drawers or in storage containers under the bed.

Use Natural and Artificial Lighting Wisely
Take advantage of whatever natural light is available. Use curtains that start close to the ceiling to make windows appear higher and make the room seem more spacious.

You have a limited amount of floor space available, so don’t take it up with lamps. Use overhead lighting or lights that are mounted on walls to provide the illumination you need without taking up valuable space. You can also use a strategically placed mirror to reflect light and make your small bedroom seem bigger.

Select Decorations That Will Work in a Small Space
The walls in a small bedroom don’t necessarily have to be painted a light color. In fact, you may want to choose a darker shade to make the room feel cozy. Just be sure to pair it with plenty of light.

Instead of trying to find a place to put a bookcase that sits on the floor, install floating shelves on a wall. Use a rug, bedspread, artwork and other accessories to add dashes of color to the room.

Explore a Range of Options
Decorating a small bedroom can be tricky. If you need inspiration, look for advice and photos online. You may also want to seek help from a local interior designer.
