How Meal Prepping Can Save You Time and Money

Cooking meals every day can be time consuming and tiring, especially if you’re doing it after a long day at work or while trying to help your kids with their homework. When you’re stressed out, it can be tempting to order takeout, but that can be both unhealthy and expensive.

Prepare a Week’s Worth of Meals at Once
Instead of cooking every day, you can meal prep and make enough food at one time to feed your family for an entire week. To do that, figure out what you want to cook and buy enough ingredients to make it in a large quantity.

Cook the meal as you ordinarily would, then split it into individual portions and put them in reusable, microwave-safe containers. Store the containers in your refrigerator or freezer so they can be quickly reheated at mealtimes. You can do this to prepare dinners, as well as breakfasts and lunches.

Meal Prepping Can Give You More Free Time
If you dread the thought of cooking dinner every night and would rather have time to relax, meal prepping can let you do that. By taking a few hours to prepare a large amount of food all at once, you’ll have the freedom to spend your evenings the way you want instead of spending them in the kitchen.

Meal prepping can help you cut down on trips to the grocery store. Rather than trying to figure out what to cook for dinner and stopping at the supermarket to pick up a few things on your way home, you’ll be able to get everything you need all at once. That will allow you to cut down on the amount of time spent driving to and from the store, finding the items you need and waiting in line.

For many people, the worst part of cooking is cleaning up. If you make all your meals at the same time, you’ll only have to clean up once.

Meal Prepping Can Lower Your Bills
Cooking in bulk can help you be more purposeful with your shopping. Instead of walking down the aisles and tossing things in the cart, you’ll be able to buy only what you need. That can help you avoid throwing away things that you bought and didn’t use because they expired.

Buying everything you need at one time can also eliminate unnecessary trips to the grocery store, helping you save money on gas and avoiding excessive wear and tear on your vehicle.

Cooking all your meals at once can reduce your energy usage. Instead of running the oven and stove every day, you’ll be able to use them only once a week, then use the microwave the rest of the time. You’ll also cut down on the amount of cleanup, use less water and run the dishwasher less often. All of those changes together may significantly lower your utility bills.
