Weekend Mini-Adventures for Your Family

Family vacations can be wonderful and exciting ways to build lasting memories. Unfortunately, most families can only plan one special vacation annually. If you’re hoping to encourage quality time outside of those yearly trips, a well-planned mini-adventure is just what your weekend needs, and these ideas are sure to keep the whole family having fun.

Local Hike
Whether you choose a gentle hike on a maintained path or you opt for a more rugged adventure, your family is sure to enjoy getting outside and exploring nature. Families with young children might be surprised to know that there are plenty of local areas designed for gentle exploration. Many towns have hiking trails or paths that are even wheelchair and stroller-friendly, meaning people of all ages and physical abilities can join in the fun. Contact your local parks and recreation department to find out what is available near you.

Geocaching
Combine the fun of a scavenger hunt with the fun of modern technology and you’ll have a new family favorite activity. Geocaching allows your family to use GPS to find hidden containers of treasures left behind by other participants. Since everyone works together to find the treasure, this activity is perfect for families with children. Explore your surrounding area like never before and work together to create your own geocache to leave behind with a fun trinket or note for other families to find.

Stargazing Night
Stargazing is fun in any season, depending on your climate, and can be an engaging and awe-inspiring activity for older children who can stay up until dark. Find a great lookout spot, grab a picnic blanket and a thermos of hot chocolate, and wait for the magic to happen. Looking at the stars is fun anytime, but if you plan ahead, you can research times of the year where meteor showers or other phenomena are most likely to occur.

Local Festival or Event
Kite festivals, chocolate festivals and even dedicated family-fun days are the norm in many towns—if you know where to look. Chances are, there are events happening annually in your city that you have never attended or even knew about. Whether it is a city-hosted festival or simply a touring obstacle course or themed race, there are plenty of weekends to mark on your calendar. Get in touch with your community center or chamber of commerce to learn about the next upcoming family-friendly event.
