Gentle Tips to Teach Kids About Nutrition

Gentle Tips to Teach Kids About Nutrition
Getting kids interested in eating healthy and nourishing meals can be a struggle for some families. While it can be important to avoid weight conversations surrounding food there are many other reasons that kids can benefit from learning about nutrition. Gentle lessons surrounding nutrition can be extremely beneficial for your child. These simple tips can help make conversations surrounding nutritious foods easier than ever before.

Model Healthy Eating Habits
Children learn best by example so be sure that you are modeling healthy eating habits. This doesn’t mean swearing off of fast food; this can be as simple as incorporating a vegetable into every meal or seeking to sit at the table as a family. This can allow children to create the habit of slowing down to eat and truly listening to their bodies while consuming food.

Let Kids Cook
Getting kids involved in the food preparation process makes them more interested in the final recipe. Find ways to allow your child to safely assist you based on your child’s age and ability level. Involving your child can make them excited about the meal. This can ensure they are ready to try foods that they may not have otherwise eaten.

Explore New Produce
Kids are naturally curious and love to explore. Take advantage of this. Let your child pick out a new vegetable or fruit at the store or farmer’s market. Next, choose a recipe that incorporates the new food. Children can get very excited watching their creation come to life, and it can be an excellent way to incorporate new food into your whole family’s diet.

Make Food Fun
Food that is marketed to children is bright and colorful. Ensure that your child is equally drawn to the nutritious food that you have made. Use colorful utensils, animal or character food picks, trainer chopsticks and other child-friendly tools to make your child’s lunch as fun and colorful as the packaging of their favorite sugary cereal.

Eat the Rainbow
Eating the rainbow is essential to getting those vital nutrients from a variety of fruits and vegetables. Even familiar foods can benefit from choosing rainbow varieties. Explore purple broccoli and carrots, try out yellow and green varieties of cauliflower. Kids will love the surprise!

Seek Out an Expert
If your child has concerning food habits or is not eating, you may need to seek out an expert’s help. Nutrition tips can assist, but an expert is needed if there is a larger issue at hand. A good dietitian can help you fill in the gaps.
