6 Things to Do Before You Start a Road Trip

Going on a road trip is a lot of fun, but it requires a lot of planning. While you’re getting excited about where to go, planning your budget and your route, don’t forget about these six important steps to ensure your road trip is a success.

Get Your Car Serviced
A great road trip requires your car to be in top shape. Have your car checked for any issues and ensure that your tires are ready for more miles. A worst-case scenario car issue means you could be stuck on the side of the road in a strange area waiting for a tow truck. A best-case issue means your A/C isn’t comfortable for the duration of the drive. Before your trip, be sure to schedule an apportionment to ensure your car is road trip-ready.

Hire a Pet or Plant Sitter
If you are a plant parent or have a furry friend that needs attention, plan in advance for a trusted sitter to care for your home or animals. Remember that popular vacation seasons can mean high demand for a sitter, so plan in advance if you are taking a trip in summer, during a school break, or on a peak holiday season.

Hold Your Mail
Your mail holds vital financial and personal information. Plus you may get presents or packages that will come while you are gone. If you have a house sitter, consider asking them to check your mail. Otherwise, consider calling your post office to request that your mail is held while you are away.

Share Your Route With a Trusted Person
For safety reasons, someone who you trust should know where you are going and when you should arrive. This is especially important if you are traveling alone or are taking a trip through a remote wildlife area where you may get lost more easily. Share your expected route with a trusted friend or family member.

Buy a Map and Update Your Phone
While many apps will update automatically, be sure that your map application is fully up-to-date before planning your trip. It may be a good idea to buy a physical map if your road trip will be especially long or may take you through an area without cell service.

Clean Out Your Fridge and Take Out the Trash
No one wants to come home to a smelly space. Clean out your fridge and take out the garbage before you leave on your trip to ensure that nothing rots and smells while you are away.
