In 2021, Kate Lawton led an internal team that responded to incidents involving the use of hate speech, especially on social media, by members of the National Association of REALTORS®.

At the same time, Lawton assisted the Professional Standards Committee in developing new policies that prohibit the use of hate speech on the basis of the protected classes under the NAR’s Code of Ethics. That action reinforced the NAR’s commitment to eliminating barriers to homeownership, advancing equity and fairness in the industry, and ensuring that all people have access to the American Dream.
