Rich Barton

Zillow

In 2019, Zillow Group, Inc. co-founder Rich Barton returned to the position of CEO, which he held from the company’s founding in 2005 until 2010, when he took on the role of executive chairman. Co-founder Lloyd Frink, who had been serving as CEO, became executive chairman. Co-founder Spencer Rascoff, who served as CEO from 2010 until Zillow Group’s IPO, remained on the board of directors.

The company has been expanding its scope by buying and selling homes and providing mortgages and other real estate services.

“We created Zillow Group in 2005 to make the real estate shopping and purchase process easier,” Barton said in a statement. “Much of our original dream is just now becoming possible. We are at an inflection point in this quest, and the time is right to shuffle leadership seats. I am excited to be back as CEO. I am incredibly grateful to Spencer for the indefatigable leadership that got us to this point, and I am happy we will benefit from his continued support and counsel as a board director.”

Barton founded Expedia within software company Microsoft in 1996. The company went public in 1999, and he served as president, CEO and board director until 2003. Barton co-founded Glassdoor in 2007 and served as non-executive chairman until its acquisition in 2018. From 2005 to 2018, he was a venture partner at Benchmark, which invested early in companies such as Netflix, Instagram, WeWork and Zillow. Barton has served on several public company boards.
