The Art of Designing a Home Office

Spacious Masculine home office design with walnut veneer fireplace and oversized windows.

The home office is an essential amenity. Modern life has drastically changed how and when we’re productive, and as more people are able to do their jobs from home than ever before, it’s important to have a living space that promotes a balance between work and play. If your home is lacking a designated work space, here are a few tips for designing a home office that maximizes productivity.

Environment and Habits

Think about your ideal work environment: do you prefer total isolation in order to focus or a more open space with activity around you? Maybe you’ll be doing video conference calls or need a place where clients can meet over a cup of coffee. For some people, natural light is important when working while others are night owls. The point is, everyone has different work habits and your office should cater to yours.

Furniture and Décor

You want a design that stimulates creativity. That could mean having a standing desk, a clutter-free minimalist vibe, or decorating with artwork that inspires. You may also need plenty of shelf and storage space or a separate seating area for reading or brainstorming. Of course, a desk and ergonomic chair where you can work comfortably are most important, but don’t overlook the impact of a calming color palette and thoughtful lighting.

Tech to Get the Job Done

Make sure to include all the technology you’ll need to run your command center. To cut down on glare and reflection, try to position your monitor at a right angle to any windows. A wireless mouse, keyboard, and printer help to keep your desk feeling clean, while a designated charging station is always a necessity for powering your devices.

Whether you run your business out of the house or just need a quiet study to collect your thoughts, having a home office is an increasingly desirable amenity as more and more people are working remotely.
