Family time can help everyone feel connected, particularly children. Quality time gives them a sense of belonging and opportunities to share their thoughts and experiences, as well as to receive insight and guidance from others. Unfortunately, with work, chores and other commitments, it can be hard to find enough time to spend together on a regular basis.
Make Changes
Finding more time to spend together as a family requires a strategy. By assessing your priorities, delegating or sharing tasks, trying new approaches and planning family gatherings on a consistent schedule, you and your loved ones can reconnect.
Parents often feel overwhelmed by endless responsibilities and requests. It’s impossible to please everyone all the time. Make a list of things that need to be done, and another list of things that you would like to do, or that someone else has asked you to do, but that you don’t necessarily have to do.
Ask family members to help with essential chores. Any adult or teenager with a driver’s license can handle grocery shopping and other errands. Kids can help with laundry and cleaning. Young children might not make the tasks easier, but including them can make them feel important and help them learn skills so that they can become independent later.
If commuting to and from work is leaving you without much time to spend with your family in the evening, ask your boss if you can modify your schedule or work from home sometimes.
Fun Family Activities
Ask your family to help you cook. Young children can help with tasks such as washing vegetables, measuring ingredients and setting the table. Cooking together provides an opportunity to talk about nutrition, and kids are more likely to try new foods if they take an active role in preparing them. Plan meals for the week to avoid last-minute trips to the grocery store.
Have regular family nights. This can be any evening when you all go out to dinner, stay in and order pizza, go to a movie, go bowling or do anything else that everyone enjoys. The key is to spend time together on a consistent basis, no matter what. Everyone should know when family night is and should make it a priority.
Take a family vacation. You don’t need to go to an exotic place or spend a lot of money. A few days at a campground, a road trip to visit family or friends, or a staycation with time spent exploring your local area can be a fun bonding experience.
Talk to Your Family
With so many responsibilities, it can be hard to spend as much time as you would like with your family. To have more quality time together, you need to make it a priority. Talk to your family about changes you can make to your daily routine so that you can spend more time bonding.
