RISMEDIA, Nov. 22, 2008-Although I’m personally not a Seinfeld fanatic, I couldn’t help but be impressed with the show’s writing on a particular episode in which George’s abstinence perfectly parallel’s today’s message: unloading.
In the episode, George’s abstinence makes his mind sharper. The ever-perceptive Jerry reasons that because George has committed himself to abstinence, he has cleared his mind of the thousands of thoughts a day that most men have relating to sex, and opened up a limitless space to learn and master virtually anything. George uses his new-found intellect to give batting advice to baseball superstar Derek Jeter, speak Portuguese and prepare a presentation for Jerry’s assembly.
Of course, the moment George gives up his abstaining ways; his mind gets cluttered with all kinds of erotic thoughts that take away his clarity and power to master new endeavors. Essentially, his brain becomes “clogged” and he no longer has the capacity to focus on and succeed at meaningful tasks. This was an insightful episode indeed!
Although I’m sure Jerry Seinfeld wasn’t trying to teach us a valuable lesson about the power of minds, his reasoning was spot on. Humans on average have over 60,000 thoughts per day. Over 95 % of these thoughts are unconscious, meaning we don’t even know we’re thinking them and yet they have just as powerful an impact on our life as our conscious thoughts.
So here’s the deal: like the law of gravity is to physics, there is a universal law that governs how we get results in our lives. It is this: what you focus on grows. What you place your attention, focus and energy on expands. Herein lies the problem for most people: of those 60,000 thoughts per day, the vast majority are focused on the wrong thing – what we don’t want – rather that what we desire.
Enter journaling and the unloading process. Journaling is the most effective tool that exists today in coaching today. Why? It is because journaling provides a forum for unloading all of your thoughts and essentially un-clutters your mind. You get all of your thoughts out of your head and you clear space in your brain. And like George Costanza on Seinfeld, your mind is now free to focus on what is really important to you and what you really desire in your life.
One of the most prominent examples in sales is the desire for more sales or more money. By examining this unloading process amongst our journaling clients, we have found that most people are focusing on the wrong things. Yes, they want more sales and more money, but the thoughts in their head are reflecting everything but more sales and more money. Rather, most thoughts go like this: “The market is down;” or “How am I going to pay my bills;” or “There’s not enough business to go around which means there’s just no possible way I can achieve my income goals this year;” or “No one is buying right now.” These are the thoughts that dominate many of our clients’ minds and clutter up the brain.
Through the unloading process, our clients dump all of this garbage into their journal and free their mind to focus on what they truly want. For some that means more sales and money and for others it’s deeper relationships. And do they get these things? You bet! Those who accept and adhere to the universal law of “what you focus on grows,” and who un-clutter their minds and focus strictly on what they want get what they’re after.
Our advice? Try it! Go to www.fom52.com and try journaling for one month at only $14.95. Unload the garbage in your brain and free up space to focus on what you truly desire. We know you’ll start to feel better in that very moment! Do it consistently and you’ll find getting what you want is easier than you thought.
