Should I Put an RV on My Property?

You may be wondering if it’s worth the investment and if you should really consider putting an RV on your property. While there are certainly some setbacks, a carefully considered arrangement can make it an ideal option for many homeowners. Here is what you should know before taking the leap.

The Pros of Putting an RV on Your Property
There are a few pros of an RV that you may not have thought about, but your specific property and goals will influence how beneficial they may be for you.

Easy Access for Trips
If you dream of hitting the road and touring your favorite spots on a whim, having an RV stored on your property can make it easy to take a new trip without much planning. While renting an RV or storing your camper in a storage location can be another option for trip-takers, having your RV ready can reduce barriers to weekend getaways.

Private Guest Space
Hosting guests can sound enticing until you realize you don’t have space or will face limited privacy. An RV or camper on your property can ensure that your guests have a private space they can call their own for a short visit; this can be ideal for large families who may lack a guest bedroom but want to be hospitable to friends and family.

Rental Options
A refurbished camper can be a charming option to live or stay temporarily. You may have the option to rent out your RV or camper to those in search of an inexpensive Airbnb or a family member who needs a rental home.

The Cons of an RV on Your Property
Rushing into a purchase without checking your local laws or truly considering your space can be a common mistake. Don’t fall into that trap.

Municipal or HOA Regulations
Be sure that your local, state and HOA’s laws or bylaws support the use of an RV or camper on your property–particularly if you plan to allow someone to rent or occupy the space. Ensure there is clearance between your building and the RV and that you’re following any fire safety or legal guidance.

General Maintenance
A camper or RV can be a great option for recreation, but they do require continual maintenance to ensure you get the most out of your investment. Leaving your camper stationary for an extended period can lead to issues like flat tires or mechanical problems.
