How to Spring Clean Your Closet

How to Spring Clean Your Closet

The spring weather means a changing wardrobe—time to put away the heavy sweaters and take your shorts out of storage. While you’re at it, use the opportunity to clean out your closet and get rid of items that no longer fit or that you no longer love. Making closet cleaning a yearly routine ensures you have space to buy new items you truly love.

Take everything out. Begin with a full purge. Take everything out of the closet so that you can take stock of everything you own. This will allow you to truly understand just how much you have. It may also open your eyes to how much of your wardrobe you’re not wearing.

Sort it all. Set up bins so you can sort everything into a keep pile, a donate pile, a put in storage pile and a trash pile for used items that aren’t in good enough condition to donate. This will make it simple to dump the trash and store away the items you won’t be using again until fall.

Clean the interior. Since the closet is now empty, you can now quickly and easily clean the interior. Take a broom or vacuum to the floor, dust any shelving and wipe down anything that looks grimy.

Organize it all. Now, with your keep pile, organize everything so like items are together. Pants in one pile, undergarments together, items you want to hang such as dresses and dress shirts together, socks in their own bin, and bedding together. Then you can easily put it back in your closet in its right place. If you want to get really fancy, you can also organize like items by colour, making it super easy to find exactly what you’re looking for.

Donate. When you’ve completely cleaned and reorganized your closet, it’s time to take all those items you no longer need and give them to charity.
