Practical Holiday Gifts for New Homeowners

As we get older, sometimes it’s hard to find presents for our loved ones. After all, you can only give a tie to your husband or a piece of jewelry to your wife so many times before it becomes too commonplace and expected.

That’s why it’s always fun to mix it up and buy unique gifts that are unexpected. This could be anything from something you saw in a Sharper Image catalogue to an innovative item that caught your eye on a late-night infomercial.

But gifts that are practical are always good as well. If you’re looking for gifts for friends or family (or your own spouse!) who have recently moved into a new home for the first time, here are some great ideas.

Tools:
When someone moves into a new home, they most likely have a hammer, some screwdrivers and maybe a wrench or some other tool. But there are plenty of other tools that would make great gifts and be useful around the home. Things like a drill, a ratchet and socket set, a level or just a toolbox for holding things. Even if the person isn’t very handy, these are all items that they probably will need at some point living in their home.

Small Appliances:
Much like on a wedding registry, people moving into a new home usually have a need for some basic appliances like a toaster, coffee maker or slow cooker. Fun things like a waffle maker or a popcorn machine are also great gifts and will bring plenty of smiles.

Welcome Mat:
Although they were much in fashion in the ’60s, ’70s and ’80s, welcome mats are not as popular as they once were, but they still can be a “welcome” addition to a home as a gift. Today’s mats can usually be ordered custom-made, so you can have them put the family name or a favorite logo or saying on it.

Storage Containers:
This might not get the gift receiver too excited, but anyone who lives in a home understands how often you need to put food away when there’s not enough containers to do so. Plus, people hold on to their old containers for so long, they usually have a collection of mismatched tops and cracked bottoms. A practical gift like this will be appreciated in the long run.
