Tips for Buying a Home Where Pets Lived

Finding the house or apartment that is right for you is a challenge. You want a certain number of rooms, a nice kitchen, storage space and maybe a yard. Now, what if you find all of that, but it turns out the current owners have pets and you’re allergic?

This doesn’t mean you have to pass on the home if it has the other factors you’re looking for. There are some easy and affordable steps that can clear a house, where cats or dogs roamed, of dander and the scent of pets.

Dust, Dust, Dust:
It seems pretty simple, but if you thoroughly dust, you’ll pick up a lot of dander and pet hair. Before moving in, dust floors, walls, stairs, doors, shelves, kitchen cabinets and anything else you can think of, using a cleaner designed to eliminate pet smells.

Clean Your Ducts:
Your home’s ducts can become the home of dander, hair and fur, and getting them cleaned by a professional can be a big help. Also change your air filter and vacuum the vents and the areas on the wall near the vents.

Have the Carpets Cleaned:
Vacuuming carpets will help, but a professional cleaning will do an even better job of removing dander and pet smells from your carpet. If the person in your family is severely allergic, you may want to consider replacing the carpet, especially in their bedroom.

Something’s in the Air:
Even if you thoroughly clean, you may still smell the pet. Airing out the house by opening the windows, especially on a chilly day, will make a difference. You can also buy an air purifier, especially a model designed for pet odors and dander.

Plan in Advance:
If you or a family member have serious allergies, do these steps in advance of moving into the home. You may even want to stay in a hotel for a few days before officially moving in to ensure the air is clear. It’s an extra step that isn’t ideal, but if it turns a pet’s house into your dream house, it’s worth it in the long run.
