Are You Adequately Insured?

Are You Adequately Insured?

Insurance can shield you from a devastating financial setback if you get sick or injured, you’re involved in a car accident, or someone gets hurt at your house. As the years go by and your circumstances change, your insurance needs might change, as well.

Protect Your Home
You need enough homeowners insurance coverage to rebuild your house if it gets completely destroyed. If you made improvements that raised your property’s value after you took out your policy, you might have to increase your coverage to adequately insure your home.

Get Enough Liability Coverage
The liability coverage in your homeowners and auto insurance policies will pay if someone gets hurt at your house or if a member of your family is found responsible for a car accident that injures someone or causes property damage. In a case involving serious injuries, the medical bills can quickly pile up.

Having enough liability coverage is vital. If your homeowners or auto insurance policy doesn’t have adequate coverage, an injured person can sue you, and you can lose your home, business, retirement savings and other assets.

If you have a pool, trampoline or treehouse on your property and there’s an accident, someone can get seriously injured, or even killed. If you have a dog, it can bite someone. If any of those circumstances applies to you, think about whether you should increase your liability coverage.

The highest level of coverage that your homeowners or auto insurance company offers might not be enough to protect all your assets. If that’s the case, you can purchase an umbrella policy that will cover expenses after your other insurance has been exhausted.

Get the Right Healthcare Coverage for Your Family
Whether you get medical insurance through your employer or purchase it on your own, you should review your policy so you know what is and isn’t covered and how much your copays and/or deductibles are. If a member of your family has a medical issue and your current policy has limited coverage or high out-of-pocket costs, research other policies that the same insurance company offers and ones that are available through different insurers. You might find coverage that better suits your needs.

Provide for Your Loved Ones
Think about what would happen if you became disabled and could no longer work or if you passed away unexpectedly. Disability insurance can replace a portion of your income if you can’t work. If you have a spouse, partner, or child who relies on your earnings, make sure you have life insurance so they can pay off debts, pay for college and cover other expenses if you die.

Look at the Big Picture
Once a year, take a holistic look at your insurance coverage and think about different scenarios that you and your family might encounter. When you do, you might realize that there are gaps in your coverage. If so, figure out how to get the right protection for you and your loved ones. Consult a professional if you need advice.
