Paul Rodman serves as executive director and founding board member of the Association of Real Estate Photographers (AREP), the first trade group for real estate photographers in the U.S. The founding members include approximately 2,000 employees and licensed sub-contractors of many leading real estate companies. An additional 500 professional photographers are designated as charter members.
The association was formed to protect the work of photographers, who play a vital role in helping agents market homes effectively and attract sellers for their clients. Professional real estate photos allow prospective buyers to get an accurate idea of the layout and features of a home before they view it in person. This helps people on both sides of the transaction, since buyers don’t waste time visiting houses that don’t meet their needs and expectations and sellers only deal with buyers who are truly interested in their homes.
AREP set several priorities at the outset to guide the organization’s activities. One of its first initiatives was to create a set of photography service agreements that members could use to clearly outline the license for the permitted use of photos and other forms of media. Those standards were intended to increase professionalism within the industry and to support real estate marketing photography without jeopardizing photographers’ assets. AREP’s other priorities include formulating professional standards, recommending best practices, offering education to the organization’s members and creating certification.
