The Big Apple Is Full of Opportunity as Popular Job-Hunting Location

times-square-webRISMEDIA, May 6, 2009-New York City is the most popular job hunting city for college students after graduation, according to a recent study of college placement offices by job-search portal CareerCast.com (www.CareerCast.com) and Going Global (www.goinglobal.com), a provider of country-specific employment information. Washington, D.C., Los Angeles, Boston, San Francisco and Chicago ranked as the next best spots where students try to find jobs post-college.

“New York has always been a popular job-hunting location, but this study shows that it reigns supreme as the top city for college students to start their careers in this tough economy,” says Tony Lee, publisher of CareerCast.com. “What all of the top cities have in common are high numbers of job opportunities, diversity, and a vibrant social scene.”

The study also found that foreign students graduating from U.S. colleges tend to favor a career in the United Kingdom or China over 3rd ranked United States, followed closely by Hong Kong, India and Japan. And although the percentage of U.S.-born students who look for overseas opportunities has fallen, the United Kingdom, China, France and Australia are the most popular destinations outside of the U.S. for employment.

“Foreign students studying in the U.S. are likely to migrate after graduation, rather than stay,” says Mary Anne Thompson, president of Going Global. “Despite the fact that the percentage of U.S.-born students who look to move abroad after graduation has dropped, China, Europe and Australia still fascinate adventurous college students seeking career opportunities.”
