Tips to Discover Your Decor Style

Tips to Discover Your Decor Style

Your home should reflect your interests and be a place that promotes relaxation and warmth. Finding your decor style can go a long way to ensuring that your home is uniquely “you” and serves your needs perfectly. These tips can help you pin down a decor style that fits your home and family.

Create a Moodboard
Whether you opt for a digital board in the form of Pinterest or another photo gathering site, or you go old school and cut photos from your favorite magazines, create a collection of your favorite decor. Some things may be outliers, but overall, you’ll eventually find that you gravitate toward a particular style.

Take a Quiz
Take a page from your high school days and opt for a magazine or online quiz. You may have to take a few to find a good reflection of your style, some quizzes will be more seriously designed than others. Regardless, it can be a fun activity that may serve as a jumping-off point.

Take a Page From Your Clothes
If you gravitate toward a particular style, chances are, your clothing probably reflects that. People tend to get overwhelmed with home decor, feeling like the changes are permanent, but many find it a lot easier to just follow their heart with their clothing and personal style. Look at patterns, textures and colors you tend to gravitate to and see what will translate well in your home.

Think About Your Lifestyle
Just like some clothing options don’t work for your day-to-day living, some decor choices wouldn’t, realistically, mesh well with your lifestyle. As you explore eye-catching decor styles, be brutally honest about what would (or wouldn’t) work well with your home and your household. Remember that celebrity homes are often styled and cleaned by professionals, so impractical items are often featured. If you have four boys under the age of 10, an all-white aesthetic may be better suited for another day and age. Likewise, if you hate dusting, crown molding or artistic statues filling your home may not be for you. Bring in elements of your favorite decor styles, but mix them with more practical choices to create your own aesthetic and style.
